The early Christian teacher Irenaeus declared, “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” If he’s right, then children must be where God’s glory shines most brightly. After all, kids experience life with such intensity—joy, adventure, learning, and limitless possibilities. And sorrow.

A big part of our work is to create safe and healthy spaces for young people to experience the fullness of life, often while their parents or caretakers are recovering from housing instability and other trauma.

The goal is to make our affordable housing communities great places to be a kid. As we close our fiscal year this month, I invite you to help!

We are inspired by an image from the Hebrew prophet Zechariah of “men and women of ripe old age” watching kids feel safe enough to play in the street.  Okay, we don’t encourage playing in Denver’s car-filled streets. But we do have a multi-generational community with people of all ages looking out for one another.

More than 70 kids live on the block at Clara Brown Commons, filling the air with the sounds of outdoor play. Our staff team includes youth advocates and educators. Opportunities for kids at CBC include Whiz Kids tutoring and Young Life/Wyld Life. We help residents know one another’s names—the simplest and most impactful way to make a place safe.

Joshua Station hosts fun activities in our awesome youth space, Whiz Kids tutoring, summer camp in their own backyard, Rainbow Trail family camp, play therapy with skilled therapists, and community dinners where kids experience a big, loving community. Life at Joshua Station is so supportive for kids that many come back “home” for these activities even after they move to more permanent housing.

Your generosity at this important time will help us build these wonderful spaces and opportunities. Thank you!
