Please email our Education Liaison Benjamin Armas for application details and any questions. Our tutoring program is in conjunction with our wonderful partners at Whiz Kids, who both screen and support our tutoring volunteers.

If you aren’t able to serve in this way, could you pass the word right away to someone who might? We currently need 10 more tutors.

“Not only does tutoring makes a huge difference in the lives of individual kids at Joshua Sation,” says Benjamin, “But it brings us together as a community. It’s a chance for our kids to be loved together, learn together, have fun together, and pray together.”

Beyond that, Wednesday nights bring together people from all over our city, with a remarkable variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Adult friendships form, meaningfully, side by side in serving.

Of course, the heart of it all is one-to-one relationships over time. It’s a joy to watch transformation unfold.

“I think of Mitch, a faithful tutor paired with young Liam,” observes Benjamin. “Mitch is such an easygoing and adaptable guy. From the start, Mitch realized that Liam couldn’t sustain a long attention span. So for the hour, they split the time between playing soccer and doing homework. Ten minutes soccer or something active, ten minutes math, ten minutes jumping around, ten minutes reading, and the hour is up!”

Mitch has been a steady adult presence and model in Liam’s life. He offers unfailing encouragement, affirmation, and supportive challenge. Mitch reached out with a Christmas present, and he took interest in Liam’s life events. Mitch is always assuring Liam, “I’m praying for ya.”

Liam’s made academic jumps in the past year, and is poised for more. “I love math!” Liam exclaims.

Mitch will be paired with Liam for another school year, and then will head to Philadelphia for medical training. Since tutoring with Liam has been transformative in Mitch’s life, he’s asked Benjamin to write a letter of recommendation.

Which brings us to our important question:

How might a Joshua Station kid make a difference in your life?

It’s a question we invite ALL our volunteers to consider in some way—because the deepest transformation at Joshua Station is always a two-way street. You won’t be able to answer the question now, because if you’re genuinely open hearted and open handed, it will unfold in surprising ways within you and with your paired student. Did we mention it’s a joy?

No soccer skills required. Bring what you have, and it will multiply.
