“We’re really, really proud of the work that we’re doing out here, giving back to the community and providing a safe place that people can be proud to live.” Joe Hill, project manager for Milender White, looks out over the progress his company has made renovating Joshua Station this year.
“This project is different from other projects that we typically do, because of residents living on site while we’re doing the phases of construction. We’re constantly aware of the surroundings— with people coming in and out—so it’s been something we’ve worked on to ensure safety.”
Brian Milender, project superintendent, adds: “It feels real good to get involved and give back here. We were called in to take a look at the steel and the railings and replace things. Hopefully we’re putting together a place that families can be safe and have a nice place to live.”
UPDATE
We’re in the final third of three major phases, so we’re stretching for the finish line! That means the last group of residents has relocated to temporary offsite housing, and the second group is moving back into the center section of our building. Resident, staff, and volunteer muscles are feeling the burn carrying furniture down the new walkways. Jackhammers and torches are in the fray at the south end of the building, as the final rusting structural features come down.
We hope to finish by Christmas, but we still need to raise about $775,000 to finish paying the bills.
We’ve had surprises along the way, as often happens with renovations to older buildings. Mid-construction, we had to replace 45 steel columns and several large steel beams that originally looked ok. That stretched the timeline, but more importantly, significantly increased the cost and our fundraising goalpost.
The good news is that thanks to warm autumn weather, we’re making good progress on painting. The great news is the generosity that has brought in nearly a million dollars so far. The best news is that our building will be strong and ready for another 60 years of service!
INVITATION
Once again, we invite you to join the spirit and spread the word to new donors by sending people to notamotel.com If you’re on social media, look for our posts and make your own! You can also forward this email with a personal note. Let people know It’s Not A Motel—it’s Housing That Heals.
Finally, maybe you’ve seen the construction as you north on I-25 past 8th Avenue in Denver. Why not drop by for a visit and see the progress? We’d love to show you around, and you can respond to this email to make arrangements.
With gratitude,
