“It’s the best Christmas Store ever!” For longtime shoppers and volunteers, that’s a big statement after 32 years of Store events. But it seems true.

Last Saturday morning brought our traditional bustling Store back, after pandemic restrictions and modifications. since the pandemic—when we all could gather at one time again. A whole bunch of us did:

  • 110 shoppers—Joshua Station families past and present*
  • 90 volunteers—many are former residents
  • 550 presents—for 256 kids

Gathering so many people whose lives have intertwined, the Christmas Store is a grand reunion. Lots of hugs, group selfies, and catching up. “Wow I can’t believe the triplets are 10 years old, just look at them now! They were babies at Joshua Station!” Volunteers share stories of meeting each other at the Christmas Store decades ago, which grew into an annual tradition, which grew into lifelong friendships.

New residents and volunteers simply marvel, swept into the joy. “Oh we’ll be back, that’s for sure.”

What you might imagine being a chaotic scene actually is a well-choreographed flow. Christmas music and warm welcomes usher in shoppers and volunteers. Little kids and teens head off to their respective activities, out of eyesight from their future toys. A shopper’s helper carrying a large basket accompanies each browsing mom, dad, and grandparent through table after table of age-arranged gifts. Choices are tough! After the pay station (new toys at a fraction of retail price), shoppers relax and mingle over hot drinks and cookies. Baskets go to the wrapping room and are returned, under-the-tree ready.

It’s a dignifying, uplifting, relationship-building twist on “holiday toys for those in need” that sometimes can leave recipients feeling… well, needy. Shoppers at the store express feelings of belonging—interconnected with a thriving community they contribute to.

Thanks to all who contributed time, money, gifts, and love. Many were at Joshua Station in person Saturday, and many more in spirit. I hope you can delight in the good gifts of this season.

In Christ,

Jeff Johnsen

*Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Center clients, many of whom are also Joshua Station residents, also joined us for the store.
