Bringing Gifts to Joshua Station

Ben Sooy, Joshua Station’s new Manager of Volunteer Services, is eager to get you involved. So many ways you can share in the lives of our families overcoming homelessness!

Ben brings long of experience in community development and urban church life—in other cities as well as Denver. After a stint in Capitol Hill, he’s been on Denver’s west side for the past five years, connecting metro-area churches and volunteers with good things happening in low-income neighborhoods such as Sun Valley.

Ben and his wife, Kate, love being connected to a diverse set of neighbors in their own Valverde neighborhood, with close proximity to “the best Mexican and Vietnamese food in Denver.” Ben also leads Cyprus Community Church, which meets both outdoors and online these days. That leadership often involves a guitar slung over his shoulder, and he joins the ranks of our own staff who can be heard picking a tune on our Joshua Station patio.

Ben will continue to grow the rich web of relationships that connects our volunteers and residents. It wasn’t easy to say goodbye to Heather Krause (pictured below, kneeling)—our previous volunteer coordinator, who many of you worked with. She has moved forward in her dream to be a hospice social worker. Heather’s beautiful touch is everywhere here, most visibly in the high bar she set with you in our “Spruce-a-Room” projects. Ben brings new gifts, and he really looks forward to you bringing yours.

Urgent Needs

  • Joshua Station community meals: November 19, November 25 (Day before Thanksgiving), and December 3. All Thursdays in 2021 are open, and it’s a meaningful way to rally your church group, business, or other friends.
  • Spruce-a-Room: We have five new families arriving this fall. Got the decorator touch? Friends you can organize to make a room look special?
  • Building and grounds: Skilled and unskilled help is needed right now to make our facilities look nice and function well
