Five Senses

Lately I have been of the conviction that the best way I can show the love of Christ to others, and embrace spiritual formation in Christ, is through constantly being aware of my attitude. I've been exploring what actually shapes my attitude, and I've come to this conclusion: my attitude is endlessly being shaped by one of my five senses, and often more than one.
I'm going to start posting reflections on my five senses, and how they contribute to my faith walk--a walk that constantly reflects the way I perceive, interact, engage, love, and think about the world. More importantly, my senses shape the way I artistically express my love for God, or lack thereof.
I’ll be asking you to interact with my thoughts, to help me determine what I am 1. hearing 2. seeing 3. feeling 4. tasting and 5. smelling. I'll also be using some fun scientific facts on each of these five senses from this great five senses website.

Sam, I assume "most people would agree" on eyesight. But that got me to thinking, maybe "touch" would be toughest to lose. Without touch, would the world be at best just like living in front of a TV screen, disembodied? Would I really almost have no sense of even having a body, or being alive? Right now I am feeling the keyboard under my moving fingers, the chair under my stationary butt, my slightly sprained ankle, the cold draft from the window, my eyelids blinking, and on an on the more I take notice. It's all part of my connectedness to the world. My sense of self is pretty wrapped up in all this... and of course the other senses too. I look forward to what you've got up your sleeve with all this.

I love this blog. I read quite a few, but the authenticity from this place is amazing.
About this specific post, there are some great materials on attachment that have to deal with the senses. Attachment is a level above communication. I think that all subburbanites (sp?) who want to work in urban and/or cross-cultural settings need to understand how our senses play to the ability or lack of ability ot attach to those we minister with. I think positive reflection on this will go a long way in helping your ministry.

Kevin,
Thanks for your encouragement about our site. I agree that there is something very special happening here.
On your comments, I agree with you that understanding attachment issues that stem from our senses is important. However, I don't think it only applies to suburban to urban folks, but to everyone all over. As a Mexican-American...I've far too often denied people the passage they requested in my life because of the perceptions I had of them. Today, some of my best "amigos" are gueros...white folks. The reality is that everything is a 2-way street...no matter what, it's always give and take, even with God.
